The talk at Exposure+ Photo details the steps taken in translating photographic subjects into product design – an effort in achieving a more sustainable product design practice.
In March 2022, the Creative Director of GLUE Studio presented a talk about our publication, After The Rain, and the sustainability efforts that the photography journal inspired at the Exposure+ Photo event.
The event ran from 26 February to 13 March 2022 under the theme ‘Belong’ – a celebration of unity and triumph over adversity. Eleven photographers based in Malaysia and five international photographers contributed towards a series of exhibitions, talks and screenings held in and around Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The event was sponsored by Canon.

How photography informs product design
“From photographic meditation to sustainability action”, presented by Zarina Holmes, Founder and Creative Director, GLUE Studio, detailed the steps taken in translating photographic subjects into product design – an effort in achieving a more sustainable product design practice.
The design prototypes showcased at the talk were from the studio’s low-impact, carbon-neutral Design Shop. The design of the products featured at the event – the recyclable phone cases and stainless-steel water bottles – is inspired by the illustrations and photography of flowers in and around West London.
The event also introduced the audience of photographers and built environment professionals to our publication After The Rain. The journal, first published in 2019, was introduced at the HF Artsfest 2019 in London, UK. The 2022 Kuala Lumpur talk showcased Holmes’s Homegrown Series, featuring photography of flowers that she had grown during the lockdown, and upcycled containers and wrappings from Amazon packagings. It served as a preview for the second volume of After The Rain, published in June 2022.
After The Rain: Number 2 continues our Creative Director’s meditation and observation on nature. Using her seaside hometown as an allegory on the current state of the environment, she explores the themes of life, death and rebirth. This edition is available on Blurb Books, and soon to be published on Amazon.
