From Batgirl to Batgranny: Unpacking ageism in comics
Where are they? Why are they erased as the characters get older? Why is Spider-Man’s Aunty May getting hotter and hotter in the movies? What happens to Supergirl and Batgirl once they become Supermom and Batgranny? Authors and illustrators Sarah Miles, Lucy Sullivan and Chrissy Williams got into the heart of the matter at the panel Hags, Grandmas & Witches: [Older] Women in Comics on 24 October 2025 at the Artist Alley Stage.

Magic and mind games: beyond binary love
Imagine a world where love isn’t confined to the gendered binary of male and female, where pleasure and pain are all in the mind, literally. Authors Nadia El-Fassi, LK Stevens, Kate Dylan, Sangu Mandanna, Lucy Jane Wood and Emma Hinds talked magic, witchcraft, worldbuilding at the panel Cloaks, Wands, Pleasure and Pain. Concepts entered into the conversation: competency porn, “why choose” genre, monster romance and “fast-paced romantasy with intense yearning”.

Gold and grimoires: crows myth of the British Isles
Author and illustrator Katie Whittle delighted fans with a new book, Crawe! The Corvids of the Anglo-Celtic Isles and their Folklore. We find the gold lettering on the cover, the gilded edge and beautiful illustrations simply irresistible. Also not to be missed is Knight Terrors, an anthology of comic horror stories edited by her other half of Frisson Comics, Tom Smith.

Lest we forget
Glad to see Tony Moy on Day 1, promoting new works as wells as his amazing work graphic novel project, 4Forty2nd – The Lost Batallion, about the Japanese-American 442nd Regiment that served in Europe with the Allies during WW2.

The rise of cultural gaming
Manolis Varouchas, Director, Video Games Museum in Crete, Greece, explained the curation and objectives being the museum at the talk “From Greek Ruins to Greek Pixels: The Rise of Cultural Gaming” on 25 October 2015. More on this later on Story Of Books.

The master of horror
Delighted to find Joe Oliveira of Afterlight Comics again. The horror comics publisher has gone from strength to strength over the years. We look forward to taking The Passenger of the U-977 and Falling Awake graphic novels back to Kuala Lumpur.
